JC MotorsportsJC Motorsports was incorporated for the 1999 racing season by James (Jimbo) Campbell, who is the owner and driver of #66 to compete in the highly competitive NASCAR Modified division at the Rocky Mountain Raceway in Salt Lake City, Utah. After four years in which he finished 7th, 3rd, 5th and 2nd in the RMR PPG Modified point standings, it was time to move up to USAC Sprints. Although the Modified class was very good to us, RMR changed the rules for 2003, mandating a sealed "crate" engine where everyone uses the same engine and no work is allowed. Rather than spend money to go down in performance, JC Motorsports decided to instead spend their limited resources in moving up to a more professional class, governed by national USAC rules rather than the local track. We are competing now in the USAC Mountain Region Sprint Series, and have finished the four seasons in 9th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 4th places respectively in the final point standings. Along the way we also picked up two very expensive "Hard Luck" awards and three "Sportsman" awards. During the 2006 season, we made great strides in getting the chassis hooked up in the turns, that's the good news. The bad news is we could pull longer down the straights, which stressed the valve train to the point of destruction on 3 occasions. A lightened valve train to compensate for the increased rpm was implemented for the 2007 season. We had no engine failures, and landed on our roof only once. However, starting in 2008 the economy and resulting lack of sponsors hit us hard. It costs us over $1200 to start each home race, even more if wear/tear/repair are added into the equation. A out-of-state race hits the till at over $2000 assuming some idiot does not take us into the wall. In addition, an engine refresh at the end of the season adds another $2000. Also we are now competing with some well-heeled teams from California. It does not concern them if they cause a wreck because their "sugar-daddy" just pays for it. We cannot compete under these conditions, so we have cut our costs as much as possible at the expense of being competitive. The 2009 season has was spent marking time. At $870 for a new set of stickers we did not purchase any new tires. The results were predictable since the difference in new vs old shoes is better than 1.5 seconds per lap. We primarily tried to stay out of everyone's way, finished way down the tree and were involved in no OVE's (Other Vehicle Encounter). The good news is that we broke even for the first time since we started 11 years ago. The Salt Lake Valley Racing Association, which is our local club, has recognized the financial strain that affects most of our local drivers and instituted a couple of new rules for the 2010 season to try and mitigate the situation. There is a tire rule that only allows the purchase of two new tires per race date. A little help, reducing the outlay per race to about $450 instead of $870. The other is a gear rule which dictates that everyone must run the same set of gears that limits the RPM. This will help in engine maintenance but it is still unknown how effective the rule will be since they have yet to specify the gear ration.
